This is my account of journeys, largely on the road – of days hitchhiking over two continents, Mediterranean beach hopping and city exploring. These range over five decades.
From my teenage years with mind naively and intensely wide open, through more challenging 1970s hitching to more conventional travel in the 1980s. All the way to a poignant return to Manhattan 45 years after my first visit.
My travels are varied: they range from crossing the Trans-Canada Highway to hiking to the North Cape in Norway, from island hopping as a schoolboy in the days of the Colonels’ military junta in Greece to fraternising by accident with drug smugglers in Franco’s Spain.
It’s not a frenetic account in Ken Kesey or Jack Keroac style … but a more restrained English recounting of travelling times. However, slightly more risque than the brilliant Bryson …
